Consistency: Your Key To Growth And Success
3 Simple Ways to Get and Stay Motivated
Chances are you’re just like most of us who don’t just want a job, but who want to have a long and successful career where we can grow and earn more money.
You don’t just want to be in the same place forever, you want to use your skills and talents to take you to that next level.
There are many things that have the potential to stand in the way of your success and hurt your chances of having a successful career. While it may not be possible to control them all, there are indeed some things that you can control. These are the things that you yourself are doing to hurt your career.
If you think about it, we spend most of our time focusing on what others have done, are doing, or can do to hurt us, but rarely do we ever take a moment of personal reflection to sit back and take an honest look at the many things we ourselves do.
So if you’re serious about your career and want to be success then take a look at these 4 things that you may be doing to hurt your career.
#1 – Having Poor Attendance
It doesn’t matter whether its calling out sick or coming back late from break, having a poor attendance record can be one of the things that can do serious damage to your career chances. Employers look for individuals they can depend and count on to be there to take care of customers. Having a reputation of someone who’s not dependable is one not too easily forgotten. Yes your employer realizes that “life” happens, but you need to make sure that you’re doing your part by managing your attendance and being an employee that can be counted on.
#2 – Having a Negative Attitude
By now, we’re sure you’ve heard the saying that “Your attitude determines your altitude” well that is one hundred percent true. No one wants to be around a person who has a negative attitude, and that includes your employer. So if you’re looking for a sure fire way to end your career before it ever gets a chance to move forward, just continue to have a bad attitude, complain, and make negative comments.
#3 – Not Taking Ownership
Ownership is one of those elusive words that means different things to different people, but when what it comes to is the ability to take responsibility for yourself, for your behavior, and for your performance. The chances of any employer hiring someone who continually blames their shortcomings on other things and other people who never says “the buck stops with me” is very slim to impossible. Not taking ownership for your actions or your performance good or bad is a very unattractive quality and it will stop your chances of having a successful career.
#4 – Not Improving Yourself
Going back to school, taking a public speaking class, and dressing for success are just some of the things that you should be doing to help develop and better yourself personally and professionally and is one of the major things employers look for. In fact almost every interview will consist of some variation of the following question “Tell me what you have done to improve yourself?” If your answer is “duh, I don’t know” then “Houston you have a BIG problem!”
